A Passion for the Figure / A Taste of the Figure
“A Passion for the Figure” and “A Taste of the Figure” both focus on painting the figure. “A Passion for the Figure” is an extensive painting experience that takes you from photographing the model and selecting the image from the photo collection through painting the image in acrylic and finally to using washes to unify sections and delineate others. “A Taste of the Figure” is a two-day workshop on painting the figure and doing washes. In each class I teach my painting techniques using a single 1 1/2” brush and a palette limited to cadmium red light, cadmium red dark, cadmium yellow medium, pthalo blue and titanium white. I teach my approach to using photos as reference and show you how to transfer the image to a black 30 x 40” canvas by the ancient technique of gridding, using a white Lumocolor, water-soluble pencil.
Journey Toward Personal Artistic Style
“Journey Toward Personal Artistic Style” is a class designed to help students who are struggling to figure out their own artistic style. It starts with a day of discussion and introspection on what each student is drawn to, using images from art history. Then, with each student’s list of preferences in hand, we paint for two days, with each student doing a painting that reflects their preferences. This class is meant to be the start of - or the next step in - a life-long journey of discovery.

Through Artists’ Eyes
“Through Artists’ Eyes” is a class for women who want to find out more about themselves by exploring the beauty of their own bodies through modelling and painting. It has grown out of my experiences with the women who have modelled nude for me over the last 20 years. These were not professional models; rather, they were women who saw personal value in the experience. The class starts with a group meeting to introduce ourselves to one another and the process. Over the next two days, each woman has an individual modelling session, exploring her body in a relaxed, safe, quiet studio atmosphere, while images are captured on still camera for use as reference for her own painting. The group then comes together for two days of guided painting, with each woman painting herself from a chosen image.
